ORLIN S FALL Amber Kell

Chapter Four
You can t keep him oppressed! The sound of angry words and a cat hissing snapped
Orlin out of his deep sleep. The lack of a warm body beside him finished his surge into
awareness.
Blinking, he turned his head towards the sound, trying to clear his vision and figure out
where the hell Aester had wandered off to.
 Now you woke him!
Orlin recognised Styr s deep voice and Dansi s feline accent. The contrast of the dainty
blue cat woman and the giant mercenary had him sitting up.
What s wrong? Where s the king?
Dansi sauntered into the room. Your owner is off doing king stuff. I need you to come
translate for my husband.
Orlin nodded. If you wait outside, I ll grab some clothes and be right with you.
You can t! Styr crossed his arms over his chest as if he could get Orlin to obey by his
pure will.
 Why can t I?
Pets don t work. Styr made the statement as if that was the end of the matter.
Orlin gave him the attention he deserved. I ll be right there.
Dansi s smug smile didn t go unnoticed. Styr glared at her as she pranced out of the
room. Orlin slid out of bed and walked over to the chair where he had thrown his pants from
the day before.
There are new clothes in the wardrobe. The king had them brought over.
Good. Orlin opened the doors to the closet and pulled out a pair of finely woven dark
pants and a translucent white shirt. After a quick wash, he dressed and left the room. Styr
followed behind like a giant protective shadow.
Dansi clapped when she saw him.
Orlin shivered at the feel of the cold stone beneath his feet. Styr swept him up off the
ground.

 I can walk, he protested.
You don t have shoes. If you cut your feet on something, the king will have my head.
You could go get me shoes. The simple explanation didn t appear to have any effect
on the guard.
 Pets don t wear shoes.
Huh. It had never occurred to Orlin that his lack of footwear over the past weeks had
anything to do with a tradition of no shoes.
He didn t comment. Styr couldn t change the rule. Orlin would talk to Aester later.
Dansi nodded to the guards standing on either side of the double doors. Neither man
made any motion to block their way.
The only person in the room was a blue cat man obviously Dansi s other half.
Orlin, this is my husband, Ambassador Tylin. Honey, this is the pet I told you about.
Styr, set me down, Orlin demanded.
With a heavy sigh, Styr placed Orlin carefully on his feet. Orlin gave Tylin a bow in
greeting, at which the ambassador stood in return.
My dear wife tells me you speak Cresslit perfectly. The ambassador raised an
eyebrow as if he doubted the possibility.
Orlin answered in the cat language. I speak it well enough. My father didn t trust
translation machines and thought it was an important skill to have. He bartered with your
people upon occasion so he chose yours as one of the languages for me to learn.
The ambassador smiled, exposing sharp feline teeth. Excellent. I am most pleased. Do
you read it also?
 Of course.
Come sit and help me with some of these terms.
Orlin sat beside the ambassador and the two of them worked their way through the
document with Orlin answering the ambassador s questions.

A few hours later, the outer doors slammed open and Aester walked through with a
man Orlin hadn t met before.

Is it true? Aester s jaw was hard as if he were clenching his teeth.
Is what true? What could possibly have happened in only a couple of hours?
Are you working? Aester s expression begged Orlin to deny the accusation.
I m helping the ambassador understand a few things in his contract since his wife
saved me from the market.
I told you he was defying the law! the man beside Aester screamed.
Uncle! He didn t know, Aester protested, though his expression looked resigned.
Ignorance of the law is no reason to disregard it.
He s been here for less than a day. He gets time for exemption. That is the law!
Pets can t work. The man Aester had called uncle looked at Orlin as if he were slime
beneath his shoe.
He knew as soon as the words had left his mouth that he should have retracted them,
but like a runaway shuttle, they d passed his lips and he couldn t take them back. I made a [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
