could ve used a fourth. I think one of the guys is into cougars. She turned
her back and left her neighbor dumbstruck.
Feeling good about herself, she drove from her neighborhood and found
her way back to the park she had been at the day before. This time she
parked her car and wandered onto a less-traveled footpath that was

overgrown in places, but she didn t mind the brambles catching on her jeans.
She needed peace and quiet to let her mind wander over the possibilities that
Oran had presented to her.
The farther back she walked into the woods along the side of the river,
the more her arm grew stiff from the bite. It didn t hurt, but she didn t know
how long she could be away. Coming to a rock, she sat down and watched
the fish flicking the water s surface with their tails. A gentle breeze blew the
reeds and cattails together, creating an eerie music. She shivered at the
ghostly sound. Everything Oran had told tumbled together in her mind. It all
seemed impossible that she could turn into a dragon or that she might die.
Either way, they were going to leave her that night or the next. It meant that
she would never see the both of them again. That part hurt her heart. She
couldn t think about letting them go. They were virtually strangers, but it
seemed she had known them her entire life. That was what her mother had
often said about her father, that she had known he was the one for her the
moment they met. Elise sank back into the memories she had of her parents.
They were always happy together. They had been married thirty years when
they died in the fire. With no family, she had felt more lost than ever and that
she didn t belong. Elise had always wanted what her parents had. Her mother
had said happy marriages ran in the family. Her grandmother and great-
grandmother had found their mates and never had any problems. In her
teenage years, Elise was always put off by how cute her grandparents were
together, like they were always kids. Her mother said her grandparents had
been the same way.
Maybe I m supposed to be with them. I don t know. Just because three generations
before me were happy as clams in their relationships doesn t mean that I m meant for those
two, even if I am dreaming about them. But her thoughts turned back to Oran.
Everything about him made her warm and happy when she thought about
him. The ritual he d talked about, but hadn t elaborated on, seemed to be the
one saving grace she had. If it could prove to Drake that they were meant to
be together, then she wanted to go through with it, whatever it entailed,
before the venom completely infected her system.

What am I going to do? There is no easy answer. Face death. Turn into a monster.
Or leave my home behind. Elise sighed and rolled her shoulder, trying to get the
stiffness from her limb. All of this was so sudden and maddening. She liked
to have time to think things over and make a choice. Not rush into a
relationship. A twig snapped behind her. She jumped from the sudden
sound. A red-winged hawk dived from the trees on the other side of the river
and plunged its talons into the water to emerge with a fish flopping about.
The beauty of the animal flapping its wings made her wonder exactly what
Oran or Drake looked like flying through the sky. Seeing through his eyes the
night before had been an experience, but it would be fabulous to see them in
real life. Another branch broke, closer to her this time.
My, my, what do we have here? Easy pickins.
Before she could turn around, a hand covered her mouth. A knife was
pressed against her throat. Her body went rigid with fear. Her attacker s hot
breath blasted her neck. He smelled like two-day-old garbage, and she could
taste the dirt and grime on his hands. The mugger yanked her up enough she
felt the blade slice into her skin. A muffled cry escaped her lips when he
dragged her away from the footpath, into the dense wood. Some instinct in
her brain kicked in, and she began to struggle, but he held on to her tight.
She bit his finger. He yelped and pulled his hand away, but the knife dug into
her flesh. His wounded hand wrapped into her hair and pulled her further
into the brush.
Help! Elise screamed, hoping someone would hear her.
Shut the fuck up! You scream one more time, I ll slit your throat.
Understand?
Elise nodded. The fight drained from her limbs. She went limp in the
attacker s arms. He clenched her neck and twisted her around, but she still [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
